Residential Treatment Program

Elk River Treatment

Elk River Treatment Program (ERTP) was developed in 2006 as a residential treatment program for adolescents struggling with behavioral, mental health and/or substance use issues. ERTP specializes in the therapeutic treatment of boys and girls ages 12 - 18 who are struggling with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder. Since it is a medical model staffed with physicians, registered nurses and a certified nurse practitioner, ERTP can accept and treat clients that similar programs might turn away due to medical issues.

Typically, admission to ERTP is prompted by a parent's response to their child's maladaptive behaviors and/or substance use that has put them at risk of self-harm. Often these behaviors are symptoms of underlying mental health issues, physical or learning challenges that have not been diagnosed in lower level treatment settings.

ERTP provides around-the-clock supervision of an adult staff that has been carefully recruited and trained to work with troubled teens. They must pass rigorous state and national screenings before working with our young clients.

A child and adolescent forensic psychiatrist leads ERTP's multidisciplinary Treatment Team which includes licensed mental health professionals, registered nurses, a nurse practitioner, highly qualified and state certified educators. Initial assessment tools administered and interpreted at ERTP that determine a client's course of treatment include, but are not limited to, the following empirically-based assessments:

  • Multi-Axial Diagnostic Inventory (Revised Edition)
  • Adolescent Clinical Scale
  • The Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA)
  • Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventories

As needed, supplementary diagnostic tools are administered:

  • Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory for Adolescents (MMPI-A)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnostic Scale
  • Conner's Scale
  • The Beck Depression Inventory (Second Edition)
  • Juvenile Probation Officers Risk Assessment
  • PHQ-9 Depression Screening
  • SBQ-R Suicide Screening
  • GAD-7 Anxiety Screening
  • PCL-Life Events Checklist PTSD/Trauma Screening

Data collected is then evaluated and compiled and an individualized treatment plan is developed. An initial Diagnostic Impression is then formulated within the guidelines of the DSM-V.

ERTP incorporates evidenced-based and empirically supported treatment modalities which are critical to the mental health of our clients. Based on the needs of our clients, treatment might include:

  • Transtheoretical Model
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • EMDR
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy
  • Individual and Group Therapy
  • Family Systems Therapy
